Oopus has changed. We are now Moment.Us.

BIG congratulations to the team, now based in the Northern Quarter (Manchester), who have worked tirelessly to establish a context intelligence platform that can better serve exactly the right content for exactly the right moment.

A long road travelled, and a long road ahead, but as someone much smarter than me once said …

“It’s about the journey and the moments that take you there.”

Keep The Faith 65′

It all started with a song ‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) by Frank Wilson’.

Its upbeat tempo and passion infused lyrics are intoxicating. You can’t help but feel it. You can’t help but dance to it, and you can’t help but want more.

My parents were both born in a Northern town (Leyland, Lancashire) and lived their young adult years through the sixties and early seventies. They were heavily influenced by the movement that was Northern Soul.

When I hit 25, my Dad started revisiting many of the sounds that emerged during this time. I hadn’t realised there was such a back catalogue of soul music. Music that stemmed from the great American music scene that was Motown.

I always loved Soul music – Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin etc, but I was cautious never to play it too often. I believed that the tracks were few and the sound precious. I didn’t want to wear it out!

But here was Northern Soul. A movement consisting of 1000’s of previously released and unrealised soul records.

During one family event, the music proved so popular that my Dad and his original mod crew decided to setup a charity soul event - Soulaid. Since the turn of the century the charity has held six to ten soul nights each year, each event raising up to £1000 for a local charity.

These Soul Nights introduced me to the culture that envelopes Northern Soul – the dance, the fashion, the community, the talcum powder, and most importantly, the discovery of new sounds.

And as you get a little older, and you learn about love – love gained, love lost, the lyrics, they call out to you. In 2012, they saved me. Some call it ‘Tears on the Dance Floor’.

The tempo so fast that you sweat out the heartache, the bass so strong that you can’t help but smile, and the lyrics so heartfelt that you can’t help but shed a tear.

So here it is. I’ve put together a seperate blog dedicated to my own journey with Northern Soul – keepthefaith65.tumblr.com.

The blog is an opportunity to share this unique and special sound with friends and and anyone else out there. An opportunity to promote events in the North of England as the movement continues its resurgence the 21st Century.

I aim to post Northern Soul music that I have found and why it speaks to me, but to also highlight contemporary artists who have adopted elements of Northern Soul, for example, Plan B, Angie Stone, Jennifer Hudson, Rebecca Ferguson, Emeli Sande, Paloma Faith, Amy Winehouse, Raphael Saadiq, Noisettes and many others.

I also hope to try my hand at spinning the decks in 2013 so I’ll let you know how that particularly ambition plays out.

Wishing you all a great year ahead.

Keep The Faith.

Join the Moment!

I am really pleased to announce that Oopus has reached Closed Beta.

What started out as a conversation between two friends is now a real product, and a product that both myself and my colleague Andrew Ko wanted to use.

We hope others will like it too and that is why we adopted the ideology of a social music experiment. We simply believe that the Internet is only just getting going and that our earliest responses to music and the web were limited. Oopus is the next step.

To learn more about Oopus and to ‘Join the Moment’ be sure to watch the short promo below and then visit http://oopus.org/join-the-moment.

Life & Soul Pictures

I have been fortunate to spend two weeks working with Life & Soul Pictures. Based on Imperial Wharf (London), Life & Soul produces films that assert and celebrate life in all its manifestations.

A most recent example of their work was an adaptation of the best-selling children’s book by Sally Nicholls – Ways to Live Forever. The movie tells the upbeat story of two boys who suffer from leukaemia and aim to taste teenage life before their cancer goes terminal.

  • From their latest release – Ways to Live Forever (Trailer).

In anticipation of producing two additional films, I was asked to bring their visions to life through audio, photography, music, film and web technologies. Two short promotional films were created in total and presented through web and blogging systems. These included:

The creative process of design, story-boarding and soundtracking had a positive effect on both internal and external stakeholders and will significantly improve the chances of bringing two new films to the big-screen.

Many thanks to Life & Soul Pictures for affording me this opportunity. It was a productive and very enjoyable two weeks. I learnt a lot and will look forward to working with you again in the near future.

Music is Life is Music

I hope that everything is going well with you! I was wondering if you would like to participate in an exciting new social music experiment called Oopus?

Oopus brings together songs that people listen to at certain times in their lives, whether it be driving around town with friends on a Friday night, having coffee on a sunny weekend morning, or walking to work on a rainy Monday.

In a nutshell, the system aims to create playlists tailored around people’s moods during the activities that they do.

This is by no means an exact science, but we feel that if enough people respond we will start to see patterns emerge. And with this pattern we hope to help everyone create better playlists with songs that are more relevant to them at that specific point in time.

To get started, you can fill out this quick and simple form with a unique moment in your life that was set apart through a piece of music:

http://oopus.org/Form.html

Then check back at http://blog.oopus.org/category/listen for updated lists! It is that simple.

Since this is a new initiative we will have our share of growing pains. However, we hope that you will keep adding to your list when new songs come to mind so that we may help create the world’s greatest playlist!

Thank you in advance and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me!

Martin.
